Welcome to 2017 and Thank you for Volunteering!

Welcome to 2017!

The Lafayette PTA Executive Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all of your contributions and the dedication you have shown the school, it’s teachers, and the administration in 2016. It truly takes a village, and there is so much more to do!

There are two incredibly hard-working people I’d like to thank before we focus our attention forward – our Walk-a-Thon chairs, Jen Wheatley and Maya Boriboon. Jen and Maya gave a great many extra hours each week for many months to support major tasks we were unable to provide volunteers for, going way above-and-beyond to make this event a great success for our school, and a community-building opportunity for all students, parents, and local businesses. Their contribution was immense and a sacrifice. I am mentioning this for two reasons – we are truly grateful, but also as an effort to spread the time load among our community for the coming Auction, and the 2017/2018 Walk-a-Thon.

The Walk-A-Thon was one of our best yet, raising $74,411, and we thank each of you who gave money, matching funds, and supported the event with your time, as well as the students who walked 8,017 laps. This money contributes a large share of our annual PTA budget and will support salaries and activities to help our children be successful in 2017/18. These include our school Nurse, our Psychologist, Instrumental Music, Writers in Schools, our Tutors, playground and Lunch Supervisors, much needed equipment and supplies in all the classrooms, in addition to scholarships to support field trips and activities.

Every precious gifted hour of your time adds up to success that directly influences program delivery in our school. Raising money to support our students is the end goal, and we can’t do it without valuable volunteer hours. I’m making a personal ask that you also commit to donating some time to our events – without this contribution, the many tasks are left to the few. In addition to all you do for your teacher, for those of you who haven’t considered pitching in around the community events, there are many ways you can help on-or-off campus. Please be on the lookout for volunteer requests for our upcoming Auction, and other events in the spring, and consider signing up early to help our 2017/18 Walk-a-Thon. Your wonderful room parent should be emailing you about help needed for the Auction art project in your classroom.

Consider carving out 90 minutes each month to come along to a PTA meeting – the next one is scheduled for Thursday 19 January, at 6.30-8.00pm in the cafeteria (childcare provided). A summary of PTA business will be first on the schedule, and then join us for a conversation about gun violence and how we can keep our kids safe. We have a speaker from Be Smart (Gun Safety), and there will be free gun locks available.  Each PTA meeting we do our best to provide valuable parent education opportunities. If you know of a speaker, please reach out to Jodi Hill, PTA VP to share your ideas. You can find contact details for the entire PTA and Jodi here.

Safety is on our minds – let’s keep our kids safer on the internet in 2017. Child Sexuality Expert, Amy Lang, Birds+Bees+Kids, recommends checking out this site for tips on how to block unwanted sites from your router, and increase the level of filtering to block adult sites that kids may unwittingly (or not) stumble upon.

There will be much work to do and much fun to look forward to in 2017 – best wishes to you and your families – may it be filled with much happiness, and opportunities to celebrate.

Please continue to visit lafayettepta.com and follow up on Facebook so you don’t miss out on news and opportunities to contribute to your vibrant community!

Warm regards,

Jac Howard

How can you help Art at our school? Volunteer this weekend!

This Saturday at 10am, Jac Howard, our PTA president, is leading the effort with others to improve the tables in the art room.  Join her and others to help sand and resurface the tables with donated stainless steel. They need one additional helper to sand the table tops and handle them (strong back needed and an orbital sander if you have one).

Parent Education this coming Thursday 4/21: Amy Lang Birds+Bees+Kids

This week’s parent education following the 6.30pm PTA meeting, Thursday 21st April.

The Birds + The Bees: The Missing Piece To Raising Happy, Healthy and Whole Adults

Using humor, stories, and stats, Amy Lang inspires parents to take on the dreaded “sex talk” with confidence. She provides research−based tips and strategies parents of all beliefs can use to rock the sex talks.
Attendees will learn:

  • Why these talks are more important than ever before
  • The “secret formula” to effective sex talks

“Our primary job as parents is to keep our kids healthy and safe. Talking about sexuality is all about health and safety, which makes it our responsibility, whether we want it or not!”

These are your PTA dollars at work. We are really privileged to have her return to our school. Don’t miss it!

The PTA will provide childcare in the gymnasium.

Parent Education 11/19 “What Children Wish Their Parents Knew”

This Thursday 11/19, after the 6.30pm PTA meeting, we are very lucky to have engaged Mia Beck of Mind Blowing Transformation to speak with us for 90 minutes from 7-8.30pm in the cafeteria. Childcare is provided in the gym.

Here is what Mia will be addressing:

“What Children Wish Their Parents Knew”

Simple and easy strategies to solve everyday challenges with your child and clarity on how best to support them:
– How to deal with bullies in real life and on-line
– Positive communication with your child
– What your child needs most from you
– Why children lie to their parents, and how to avoid it.

“My message is very hands-on because I open up and share real life stories from my life as a family coach working with families who overcame the same things as the parents at your schools are dealing with. Such as: Kids ignoring them/having to repeat themselves a ton of times, their child’s lack of motivation, lack of respect, anger issues, their kid falling behind on school work, or crying and refusing to go to school because of bullying, etc. etc. One thing I can guarantee is that parents always walk away with a head spinning with new ideas and a lot of insight to the dynamics in their own house.”

Please come – these are our fundraising dollars at work, and a fabulous opportunity to come together as a parenting community and learn from someone who works daily with families and kids of all ages on challenging situations.
