Book Drive for Mary’s Place May 8th to 19th

Mary’s Place has just opened a shelter for homeless woman, children and families in White Center.  Lafayette and Genessee Hill Elementary’s librarians are teaming up to supply the new place with books!

Good Books to donate are:

  • New / Gently used
  • For children of any age (babies to high school age)
  • Includes characters of different backgrounds
  • In English, Spanish, Amharic or Tigrinya

Books can be dropped off at school from May 8th to May 19th.  In lieu of books, Mary’s Place would also welcome financial donations which can be made at their website www.marysplace.seattle.org

Please contact your school librarian Linda Nakagawa for any questions.

Thank you for your support!

Class Library Books are here! Volunteers needed….

New Library books for classrooms have arrived!  As you may know, all of our library books are coded by reading level (A,B,C, etc.).  The school has purchased new classroom library book kits and is in need of volunteers to code the books – basically put the appropriate sticker on the binding.  This is something that be done at home or at school.  You can pick up a box of books, stickers and corresponding lists which indicate which level a particular book is and then bring it back in once you are done.  Get the kids involved too!

If you are interested in taking a box of books home to code, please contact our Principal, Cindy Chaput at cpchaput@seattleschools.org.

Book Fair December 1st – 7th

The Library Book Fair Fundraiser is Coming – December 1st – 7th!

The Book Fair is quickly approaching and we’re hoping that you may be available to stop by during Lunch Recess or after school. Proceeds raised range from 40 – 60% of sales and will be used to purchase books for the school and Library Program. Last year we used the funds to purchase over 300 books for the Library, plus every classroom and had a guest author, Annie Crawley who visited and shared about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Ways to Shop for Books:

  1. Visit the Library (see times below)
  2. Order Online at this link: scholastic book fairs
  3. Clip & Send the Newspaper Flyer Order Form (remember to add 9.8% sales tax).

The Library cannot hold cash orders before the Fair opens on Thursday, December 1st. Checks are accepted anytime & made payable to the Lafayette PTA.  This another great opportunity to help the kids in the classroom and shop for the holidays!

Thank You!

Notice of Change to Student Vaccination Requirement

School vaccination regulations in Washington State have changed for the upcoming 2016-17 school year. The WA State Department of Health now requires two doses of chickenpox (Varicella) vaccine for all students in grades K through 12.

Here’s what you need to do:
Check your student vaccination records or contact your health care provider and be sure that each student has the required vaccinations before the start of classes in September, 2016.
School nurses will review each student’s vaccination records and will notify parents through regular postal mail by the end of the current school year if a student needs additional vaccinations. Students who do not have two doses of vaccine by the start of classes in September, 2016, could be excluded from school.
Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease that can be very serious for children and adults. Two doses of vaccine are very effective against the disease.

More detailed information can be found on the SPS webpage: http://bit.ly/1nm3Umj

You can access your family’s immunization records through the Washington Immunization Information System: http://1.usa.gov/1QyXmsJ

Sincerely,
SPS Health Services Team
