Fall Enrichment 2014 Course Descriptions

Art Cycle (K- 5th), Monday Afternoons 3:45-4:45 in Art Room 6

In this eco-friendly art class, students will use found objects and repurposed waste items to create beautiful art from things that would otherwise end up in the landfill. Students will even learn how to create their own art supplies (i.e. canvases and painting implements) from things they have around the house.

Art @ the World (2nd-5th), Wednesday Afternoons 3:45-4:45 in Art Room 6

Explore the world and culture through art! Students will create projects based on traditional techniques and styles from different cultures around the world. From Mehndi to Aboriginal dot paintings, kids will learn about the origins of each style and the culture behind it, while making their own versions to take home.

Chess Club (K – 5th), Wednesday at 8:15-9:15am in the Library, Wednesday at 3:45-4:45 pm in Room 11, Friday 3:45-4:45pm (Interm/Adv Level)* in the Library

Join Lafayette Chess Club and learn tactics and strategies of chess! Chess Mates has been offering after-school chess programs in Seattle area public schools since 1989. Chess helps children build critical thinking skills and helps focus and planning. Each class will include lesson presentation, chess puzzle-solving time and game playing time. Chess Mates will provide student workbooks, chess sets and boards and other materials. All you need to be is eager to play and learn! Both beginner and intermediate players are welcome!

*Friday PM chess will be geared for more intermediate/advanced players who have played in tournaments and/or who are willing to attend tournaments as part of Lafayette’s Chess team. If Friday does not work for your schedule, and your child would still like to compete in tournaments, enroll in a Weds class and let instructor Jeremy know.

**Chess is a yearlong program, lasting all of Fall and Winter Sessions, and lasts until Spring Break during the Spring Session, ending with the State Tournament. Typically Chess enrollment fills up in the Fall, however, there is a possibility a spot will open up during the Winter or Spring Session. Claymation Sportz – iPad Claymation (K–5th), Friday Afternoons at 3:45-5:15 pm in Room 11

Wham Bam Kazams! Underwater badminton, space hockey, ladder polo, break dance dash! Don’t hold back, get on the track! Students will use iPads (provided by C.A.N) to take animation photos, edit video/sound, and create unique music scores based on the class theme. Set, character and story construction will be taught. Comic Creation Station (K–5th), Tuesday Afternoons at 3:45-4:30 in Room 1

Comic Creation Station is an opportunity for kids to develop comic characters and plan stories with those characters. It will be a workshop format, with a short introductory activity followed by time and resources for participants to create their own comic books and strips. Maximum of 15 students

Creative Writing (2nd-5th), Monday Afternoon at 3:45-4:45 in Room 14

Creative writing is a fun way for students to share their wonderful, fantastic stories. We will look at several different mediums of story-telling, such as picture books, novels, comic books, and more! There will also be a strong emphasis on grammar and descriptive language. So please, come down and share all the funny, strange, exciting, and heart-felt tales you have been looking forward to share! Class Minimum 8

Flag Football (3rd-5th), Thursday Afternoons 3:45-4:45 pm in Room 14

Coach Fletcher will teach the basic rules and definitions of flag football, as well as help students develop sportsmanship, confidence, integrity and perseverance. Flag football allows football enthusiasts of all ages the opportunity to play with a lowered risk of injury. Each player is given a flag that is worn at the waist. Instead of tackling, the flag is removed to signify the play’s end. Participants are likely to get muddy and wet. Make sure students are dressed appropriately. Class Limit 20

We will play a variety of challenging and fun games that you loved from movement last year. These games include wall ball, gotcha ball, crab soccer, Island (w/ sharks and swimmers), scooter games and much, much more. All ages are welcome! Minimum 8 students

Guitar Lessons, (K- 2nd) Tuesday Mornings at 8:15-9:15am in Portable 27, (3rd – 5th) Thursday Mornings 8:15-9:15am in Portable 27

Students will learn basic elements and fundamentals of music and then apply the concepts to the guitar! After taking this course, students can expect to come away with the ability to count rhythms, sight read notes (on guitar and keyboard!), play basic songs on the guitar, and even write their own music! Limit 8 students each morning. Guitars provided. However, we are able to increase class size if students provide their own guitar. Please indicate on enrollment form if you can supply your own. New and returning students welcome to join!

iPad Lego® Animation: Robots 5 (K-5th), Tuesday Afternoons at 3:45-5:15pm in Room 11

Gear up, wire down, spin your servo all around. This is your one stop hip hop robot shop. Lets all make a robo sound. Let’s Craft (K-5th), Monday Afternoons 3:45-4:45pm in Room 11

Kids can come and learn to craft super cool projects with simple and fun materials. Your child will go home with a completed project each week, something they made all by themselves. The crafts will be tailored to their age and abilities, but they are free to embellish more. There will be yarn art, paper scrap collages, and paper tube stamping. Mad Science (K-2nd), Thursday Afternoons 3:45-4:45pm in Room 11

Welcome to the Mad Science After School Program where you will learn that physics is the science that just won’t quit – it’s everywhere! We’ll find physics in magic tricks, in stunt plane wings, in electrical currents and even a little bit in chemistry. Children will experiment with gravity, inertia, and centripetal force, see how magicians use science to pull off some astounding illusions, find out why “thin air” is one tough cookie, conduct cool chemical reactions, and much, much more. Every class also builds awesome take-homes to share the Mad Science experience with family and friends! Our program is a unique and innovative way to continue the learning process after school and your child will have so much fun it is hard to believe that they are actually learning at the same time. Mandarin Chinese (K- 5th), Wednesday Mornings at 8:20-9:20am in Portable 30

This class is for beginners and those students who have taken Mandarin in the past. These classes are primarily focused in basic language skills through fun activities like song and dance, playing games, speaking Mandarin, making art, writing basic characters and other interactive group tasks. Our goal is to help the children become comfortable with how the language sounds and learning to speak the words properly. Minimum 6 students.

Morning Sports (2nd-5th), Wednesday Mornings 8:30-9:15am in the Gymnasium

We will play a variety of games in this morning sports class. From Flag football, to hockey, to lacrosse, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, basketball, etc. This will be a fun day to play more or the games that you love with classmates who like them just as much!

Jump Roping (1st- 5th), Tuesday 8:15-9:15am & 3:45-4:45pm in the Gymnasium

We’ve got a Jump Roping World Champion teaching this fun-filled, high-energy class that helps kids of all skill levels learn at their own pace. We focus on “frequent small successes” to encourage ongoing growth and Self-esteem. Spanish Club (K – 5th), Friday Afternoons 3:45-4:45 in Room 14

This club is appropriate for both students new to Spanish and those with previous exposure to the language. Students will begin to put together simple phrases and will gain confidence using Spanish to communicate in the classroom. Children will also learn about customs and holidays of Spanish speaking countries around the world. Minimum 4 students. Class limit 20.

We learn cup stacking skills, we play fun games, and get your brain and body moving at the same time. This class is geared from beginners who are learning to stack in a sequence, to intermediate who are already fast at stacking and would enjoy competing against others in games, activities, and just have fun! All ages are welcome!

Explore your creative side in a fun social setting! In this class, we take creative crafting to the next level with all the latest supplies and techniques. Join us to make multi-media art, wash tape accessories, succulent terrariums and so much more. All materials provided.

Yoga (K- 5th), Wednesday Mornings at 8:30-9:15am in Movement Room 29

All props, mats and supplies provided and no special attire necessary!

Yoga at an early age encourages self-esteem and body awareness through physical activity that’s noncompetitive. It can be a vehicle to foster cooperation and compassion instead of opposition — it’s a great gift to give to your kids. Classes incorporate stories, songs, games so kids can move, understand their bodies and learn spacial awareness in an interactive way. Yoga improves concentration, focus, stimulates the imagination, increases self-confidence, and releases energy in a positive way.
