Two Tier School Schedule for 2017-18 – Use Your Voice!!!

Seattle Public Schools and City of Seattle Leaders need to hear from you in support of the change for 2017-18 school year to a “Two Tier” start times.

Next school year there will be 20 minutes added to the school day.  With the current “Three Tier” bussing system, the schedule will be even more extreme for 2/3rd of students.  It would have Tier 1 schools start at 7:45 AM (7:30 AM arrival), Tier 2 schools at 8:35 AM (8:20 AM arrival) and Tier 3 at 9:25 (9:10 arrival).  With 3 tiers, essentially 2/3 of students will be on more extreme early or late starts.

The District has determined that for all students to have more reasonable start and end times, it is important to switch to a “Two Tier” system.  A switch to two tiers would allow for 8 AM (7:45 AM arrival) and 9 AM (8:45 AM arrival) start times, including the additional 20 minutes to the school day.   This change will require a one-time transportation cost of $2.3 million.

Thanks to the advocacy of parents and collaboration with the District, the Mayor of Seattle is recommending to the Levy Oversight Committee and the Seattle City Council that this one-time funding of $2.3M be allocated to Seattle Public Schools. This will make it possible for SPS to implement equitable start times that support the health and safety of ALL students for the 2017-2018 school year.

Seattle Council PTSA passed a resolution and was active in supporting the later start for adolescents made for the 2016-17 school year, in alignment with ample research and health professional recommendations. With the addition of 20 minutes to the school day, two tiers maintains appropriate start times for middle and high, and provides reasonable times for elementary.  The 3 tier system is more extreme for 2/3rd of our students. The two tier start times were the recommendation of the Bell Time Task force and the Seattle School Traffic Safety Committee.

Please send a message District and City Leadership in support of a two-tiered schedule for the well-being of our students and families. DRAFT BELOW

Thank you for all of your support for Seattle’s school kids,

Dear Seattle Schools and City of Seattle Leaders,

Please make the health, safety, and well-being of our students highest priority and shift to two start times next school year. I want our children to be able to get adequate sleep and elementary students to walk safely to and from school. I also support sports and encourage you to adjust practice and game schedules so that all students, including athletes can benefit from later school start times. A better night’s sleep with a later start has even shown improvement in student athletic performance. Two tiers is what Seattle students of all ages need now.

I support the Mayor in recommending that one time funding of $2.3m be allocated to SPS to implement a district-wide two-tier bus schedule in the 2017-18 school year for equitable bell times, and I hope you will, too.

Thank you,

Seattle parent
