Join this collective of West Seattle elementary schools at Fairmount Park Elementary on March 10th, from 6:30 - 8:30pm for an evening of education and discussion on how to support transgender and gender nonconforming youth in our communities.
This training centers how we can show up for our transgender and gender non conforming community. We will cover the difference between sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Utilizing reflective practices and scenario based questions, we will cover how we can normalize asking for pronouns, how to respond in the face of confusion or pushback around pronoun usage, the impacts of misgendering and deadnaming, and how we mitigate and respond to that harm. We will explore non gendered alternatives to our language, and how we can integrate this into a daily practice.
While this training centers the experiences of our transgender and gender non conforming community, this training benefits us all in how we navigate our world in a gendered society.
About the Facilitator: Zenebech Demissie (they/them)
Zenebech is a queer, trans, first-generation Ethiopian artist residing on Duwamish land.
They are heavily influenced by their own communities and the communities they have the honor of witnessing in both their work and art. Zenebech is passionate about working from a liberatory praxis. This involves imagining futures and alternatives to not only the systems and structures we live in, but also alternative approaches to how we support and show up for ourselves and each other.
Zenebech is currently working as the training and technical assistance coordinator at Seattle's LGBTQ+ Center and is pursuing their Masters in Social Work.
