Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month honors the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans with ancestry in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Each year, National Hispanic Heritage Month (https://www.hispanicheritagemonth.gov/about/) is observed in the United States from September 15 to October 15.
Why does it start Mid-Month? September 15 is significant as the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18. Día de la Raza (also known as “Race day”), on October 12, celebrates the diverse indigenous and European heritage of the people of Mexico.
How can we appreciate and celebrate this month? There is not a singular correct way to acknowledge Hispanic Heritage Month, so here are a few suggestions if your family wants to explore + appreciate the rich Hispanic Heritage histories.
